Xiaomi is advancing the official launch of its next-generation SU7 electric sedan to this month to maintain momentum in China's highly competitive market.

Lei Jun, founder, chairman, and CEO of the company, announced the decision on Weibo on Friday, stating that the development of the new model is progressing very smoothly.

Xiaomi originally planned to roll out the new-generation SU7 in April, roughly two years after the model's initial rollout.

The company is currently fully committed to the production preparation of the revamped model, and large-scale deliveries will begin immediately after the launch, Lei said.

The Xiaomi EV factory's current daily shipping volume of the SU7 is about 800 units, meaning its March production preparation could reach 16,000 units, local media 21jingji said in a report on Thursday.

The new-generation SU7 started pre-sales in early January with a starting price of 229,900 yuan ($33,480), an increase of 6.48% from its predecessor's 215,900 yuan.

This price hike narrows the gap with the starting price of Tesla's Model 3 to 5,600 yuan, intensifying direct competition.

However, it is a common practice in the Chinese EV industry for the final retail price to be lower than the pre-sales price, leaving suspense for the pricing at the official launch.

The updated sedan features significant hardware upgrades, coming standard with LiDAR and 700 TOPS of assisted driving computing power across the lineup, according to previously released information from Xiaomi EV.

It is also equipped with Xiaomi's end-to-end advanced driver assistance system and adopts enhanced safety features such as 2200 MPa ultra-high-strength steel.

Updating an EV model after nearly two years is a rare practice in the Chinese market, where competitors typically refresh their product lineups annually.

To manage this transition, Xiaomi halted production of the first-generation SU7 last month, which had accumulated over 381,000 deliveries since its launch.

The strategy of announcing the replacement information in advance and removing the older model from shelves aims to avoid angering existing owners, a common pitfall in the industry.

During the transition of its sedan lineup, Xiaomi has mainly relied on its YU7 SUV (sport utility vehicle), launched in June 2025, to sustain sales.

Xiaomi has set a sales target of 550,000 vehicles for 2026, representing a year-on-year growth rate of about 34%, testing its ability to consistently deliver hit products.
