BYD maintained its position as China's largest new energy vehicle (NEV) maker in February, while Tesla returned to the top 10 in retail sales.
BYD's retail sales of passenger NEVs in China stood at 88,697 units in February, down 56.9% year-on-year, according to a list published Friday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The company continued to rank first with a 19.1% share in February. This was up from 15.8% in January, widening its lead over second-place Geely Auto.
Geely's NEV retail sales in February were 76,636 units, down 17.9% year-on-year.
Geely ranked second with a 16.5% share. In January, the market share gap between Geely and BYD was only 0.3 percentage points.
Tesla returned to the top 10 list for NEV retail sales in February. It fell out of the top 10 in January.
Tesla's retail sales in China were 38,206 units in February, up 42.7% year-on-year and up 106.7% from the previous month.
The US electric vehicle (EV) maker ranked third in China's NEV market in February with an 8.2% share.
In China, NEVs include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel cell vehicles.
Both BYD and Geely produce BEVs and PHEVs, while Tesla only produces BEVs.
Li Auto ranked sixth in China's NEV market with retail sales of 26,421 units and a 5.7% share.
Nio Inc ranked seventh with retail sales of 20,750 units and a 4.5% share.
Xiaomi EV ranked eighth in the top 10 NEV list, with retail sales of 20,414 units and a 4.4% share.
In the January-February period, BYD's NEV retail sales were 182,873 units. This was down 55.0% year-on-year, ranking first with a 17.2% share.
Geely's NEV retail sales in the January-February period were 168,771 units. This was down 20.0% year-on-year, ranking second with a 15.9% share.
In the overall passenger car market, which includes traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, Geely ranked first in retail sales in February with a 14.1% share and 145,281 units sold.
