Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV, HKG: 9868) is continuing its hybrid strategy, announcing Thursday that the G6 extended-range edition will launch on March 6, with an event kicking off at 3:00 pm Beijing time.

The rollout of the G6 extended-range variant marks Xpeng's further push into the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) segment to meet broader market demand.

According to prior regulatory filings with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the G6 EREV measures 4,771 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,890 mm.

These dimensions make it slightly longer than the G6 battery electric vehicle (BEV), which measures 4,758 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,650 mm high, though the 2,890 mm wheelbase remains identical.

Powertrain-wise, the model is equipped with a 1.5-liter engine from Harbin Dongan Auto Engine acting as a range extender. It comes with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries from Eve Energy.

The G6 EREV will feature Xpeng’s latest Kunpeng Super Electric System. Unveiled at a Tech Day event in November 2024, the technical system is primarily characterized by its ultra-long battery range among hybrids.

The launch of the G6 EREV serves as an addition to Xpeng's recent lineup updates. Earlier this year, the automaker added extended-range options to its P7+ sedan and G7 SUV.

Alongside advancing its "dual-powertrain" strategy, Xpeng is also tweaking its software business model. The company has begun offering tiered, paid advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) capabilities for its vehicles.

Including its new models, Xpeng is now standardizing its in-house developed Turing AI chip, which boasts an effective computing power of 750 TOPS. This hardware foundation supports advanced assisted driving functions driven by end-to-end large AI models.

Consumers can pay an additional fee to upgrade to the Ultra SE or Ultra smart-driving packages. This will provide them with stronger computing support and an experience approaching Level 4 autonomous driving.
