SAIC-Volkswagen, Volkswagen's joint venture in China, has filed for its large SUV (sport utility vehicle) ID.ERA 9X, preparing for the launch of the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) model.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released its latest catalog of vehicles awaiting sales approval for public comment on Thursday, with the ID.ERA 9X included.

The SUV's curb weight is 2,600/2,620/2,700 kilograms, with a maximum supported speed of 200 kilometers per hour.

The ID. ERA 9X is equipped with a 1.5L engine produced by SAIC-Volkswagen as its range extender, delivering a maximum power output of 105 kW.

It offers single-motor and dual-motor configurations. The single-motor variant delivers a peak output of 220 kW, while the dual-motor version adds an additional 160 kW front motor.

The model utilizes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and ternary batteries supplied by CATL (HKG: 3750, SHE: 300750) and Zenergy.

The ID.ERA 9X boasts a battery capacity of up to 65.2 kWh, delivering a CLTC range exceeding 400 kilometers, SAIC Volkswagen announced on Friday.

The model will also feature a LiDAR sensor mounted on the roof, seen as a key enabler for enhanced autonomous driving capabilities.

The ID. ERA 9X represents Volkswagen's adaptation to Chinese consumer preferences. As EREVs have gained popularity in recent years, their battery packs have grown larger, with some models now utilizing packs as high as 80 kWh.

SAIC-Volkswagen unveiled the extended-range SUV concept ID. ERA at the April 2025 Shanghai auto show.

At the Guangzhou auto show in November, SAIC-Volkswagen announced the ID. ERA became its new energy-vehicle (NEV) product series, with multiple models launching starting in 2026.
