Chinese lithium giant Ganfeng Lithium (SHE: 002460, HKG: 1772) faces potential insider trading charges as a case originating five years ago continues to progress.

The company said in a stock exchange announcement yesterday that it had received notification the case had been transferred from police in Yichun, Jiangxi, to the local procuratorate for review on suspicion of insider trading.

Ganfeng rectified the alleged issues in 2024 and paid fines, the company said in the announcement.

The company's production and business operations remain normal and are not expected to be affected by this case, it said.

The case involves Ganfeng's stock trading of Jiangxi Special Electric Motor (Jiangte Motor) (SHE: 002176), a manufacturer of electric motors and lithium products.

In August 2020, Ganfeng signed an agreement to acquire a controlling stake in Jiangte Motor to resolve the latter's risk of delisting from the A-share market due to two consecutive annual losses. The transaction ultimately failed later that month.

Ganfeng traded Jiangte Motor shares through its securities account during the sensitive period of insider information that month, profiting RMB 1.1053 million ($157,810).

The China Securities Regulatory Commission decided to file a case against Ganfeng in January 2022 and launched an investigation in July of the same year.

Ganfeng was ordered to forfeit RMB 1.1053 million and pay a fine of RMB 3.3159 million.

Ganfeng is one of China's most comprehensive lithium product manufacturers, possessing production capabilities for over 40 types of lithium compounds and metallic lithium products. Its offerings are widely used in electric vehicles, aerospace, functional materials, pharmaceuticals, and other sectors.

Ganfeng plans to set up a joint venture in Turkey, which plans to invest $500 million to build a lithium battery project with an annual capacity of 5 GWh in Turkey.
