Launched in 1998, the Smart brand targets the premium compact vehicle market, designed by Mercedes-Benz to provide solutions for urban mobility in megacities.

On January 8, 2020, Mercedes-Benz and Geely established a new joint venture under the Smart brand, headquartered in Ningbo, Zhejiang, to bet on the electrification transition.

The brand currently offers three models in China: the compact SUV Smart #1, the mid-size SUV Smart #3, and the full-size SUV Smart #5.

In early September, Smart announced plans to launch the two-seater Smart #2 mini electric vehicle (EV) next year as the successor to its ForTwo model.

On October 28, Smart launched the Smart #5 EHD, marking the brand's shift from pure electric vehicles to hybrid models.

The Smart #5 EHD utilizes Geely's Leishen Hybrid 2.0 technology and carries a starting price of RMB 169,900 ($24,030).

The launch of the Smart #5 EHD marks the brand's shift from offering only pure electric cars to also developing hybrid models.
