China's new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales hit a new high last month, though growth continued to slow.

Passenger NEV retail sales in China reached 1.321 million units in November, surpassing the previous record of 1.296 million units set in September, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

This represents a 4.2 percent year-on-year increase and a 3.0 percent rise from October.

The figure is lower than the preliminary data of 1.354 million units released by the CPCA earlier this month, and also below its estimated figure of 1.35 million units released at the end of last month.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) achieved record retail sales of 827,000 units in November, up 9.2 percent year-on-year and up 2.1 percent month-on-month.

BEVs accounted for 61.08 percent of total NEV retail sales in November, down 2.26 percentage points from October's 63.34 percent.

Hybrid vehicles, including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), recorded retail sales of 494,000 units in November, down 3.52 percent year-on-year but up 5.11 percent from October.

This marks the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year decline in hybrid vehicle retail sales.

After excluding EREVs, PHEV retail sales reached 378,000 units in November, accounting for 27.92 percent of NEV retail sales.

EREV retail sales came in at 116,000 units in November, accounting for 8.57 percent of NEV retail sales. This represents a 4.3 percent year-on-year decrease, marking the fifth consecutive month of decline, though it increased by 3.6 percent compared to October.

China's passenger vehicle retail sales, including sedans, SUVs (sport utility vehicles), and MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles), totaled 2.225 million units in November, down 8.1 percent year-on-year and down 1.1 percent month-on-month.

NEV retail penetration in China reached 59.3 percent in November, up 7 percentage points year-on-year and up 2.1 percentage points from October's 57.2 percent.

Domestic brands achieved 79.6 percent NEV retail penetration in November, compared to 38.8 percent for luxury brands and 8 percent for mainstream joint-venture brands, according to CPCA.

China's wholesale sales of passenger NEVs reached 1.706 million units in November, marking an 18.7 percent year-on-year increase and a 5.8 percent rise from October.

The wholesale penetration rate of NEVs in November was 56.9 percent, up 8 percentage points year-on-year and 1.6 percentage points from September.

Domestic Chinese brands achieved a wholesale NEV penetration rate of 72.2 percent in November, luxury brands reached 42.8 percent, and mainstream joint-venture brands stood at 7.5 percent.

Passenger NEVs exported from China totaled 284,000 units in November, surging 243.3 percent year-on-year and rising 19.3 percent month-on-month, accounting for 47.3 percent of passenger vehicle exports.

BEVs contributed 57 percent of NEV exports in November, down from 74 percent in the same period last year.

Exports of A0-segment and A00-segment BEVs accounted for 61 percent of NEV exports, up from 59 percent year-on-year.

Compared to October, Tesla's retail sales in China rebounded in November, partly due to the launch of a new Model Y variant and the boost from selling inventory cars.
