BYD has launched the Yuan Up DM-i hybrid SUV (sport utility vehicle) in Europe, locally rebranded as the Atto 2 DM-i, to bolster its efforts in a key overseas market.

The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant held the European launch of the Atto 2 DM-i in Barcelona, Spain on November 19, also rolling out the long-range battery electric vehicle (BEV) variant of the compact SUV, the Atto 2 Comfort.

Notably, the Yuan Up is only available as a BEV model in China's domestic market. Launching the hybrid Up DM-i in Europe signifies BYD's adoption of a more flexible strategy tailored to different markets.

The launch of these two variants further enriches BYD's product lineup in the European market, the company said in a Chinese announcement today.

BYD is responding to European consumers' diverse mobility needs by offering both BEV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models, the company said.

Since its launch in Europe, the compact SUV has won the favor of many European consumers, and BYD has introduced PHEV and extended-range BEV versions based on user feedback over the past few months, said Stella Li, the company's executive vice president.

The Yuan Up DM-i is the first plug-in hybrid model in the Yuan family, equipped with BYD's in-house developed DM-i super hybrid technology, the company said.

Its battery range reaches up to 90 kilometers, with a combined range of up to 1,000 kilometers when fully fueled and charged.

In China, the Yuan family lineup -- including the Yuan Up and Yuan Plus -- currently offers only BEV versions.

The Yuan Up long-range BEV variant, or Atto 2 Comfort, boasts a WLTP range of 430 kilometers, exceeding the entry-level model by over 100 kilometers, according to the company.

The Yuan family ranks among BYD's top-selling models, with 48,902 units sold in October despite a 12.73 percent year-on-year decline, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Currently, BYD passenger vehicles are available in 33 European countries, with plans to expand its European dealership network to 1,000 locations by year-end.

BYD's new vehicle registrations in Europe reached 24,963 units in September, about five times the figure from the same period last year.
