Firefly has begun mass production of its right-hand drive variant, signaling an acceleration in the global expansion efforts of Nio Inc's (NYSE: NIO) premium compact car brand.

On November 18, the Firefly right-hand drive model officially entered mass production, with the first batch destined for the Singapore market, Nio announced today.

This marks a significant step in Firefly's global expansion, paving the way for its entry into more international markets, the electric vehicle (EV) maker said.

Nio officially launched the Firefly brand at Nio Day 2024 on December 21, 2024, positioning it to challenge Mini and Smart. The brand's namesake first model, the Firefly EV, was launched in China on April 19.

On August 14, Firefly commenced deliveries in Europe, with Norway and the Netherlands as the first available countries.

To date, Firefly has started deliveries in the Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium, with test drives and deliveries set to launch soon in Denmark, Greece, Austria, Portugal, and Luxembourg, Nio said today.

Nio originally planned to launch Firefly in Europe first, but shifted to a China debut due to Europe's higher tariffs on Chinese EVs.

On August 18, Nio announced a partnership with Singaporean automotive retailer Wearnes Automotive, established in 1906, which represents and retails multiple premium and luxury brands.

Starting in 2026, the two parties would launch the Firefly EV in Singapore, according to a statement at the time.

On November 7, Firefly announced a large shipment of vehicles to Europe and first revealed its overseas expansion would also include North America.

Driven by Nio's national distributor model, Firefly was deepening market penetration in Europe, North America, and Asia, it said earlier this month.

Nio initially adopted a direct sales model for overseas expansion but has shifted toward a more asset-light national distributor model over the past two years.

Nio Inc delivered a record 40,397 vehicles in October, with Firefly accounting for 5,912 units -- marking the third consecutive month of record-breaking deliveries, according to data released on November 1.

Earlier this month, Firefly filed for a new variant featuring a higher-power motor.

The Firefly EV currently starts at RMB 119,800 ($16,840) in China, making it the most affordable model under the Nio Inc umbrella.

Firefly uses safer, higher-performance liquid-cooled battery packs, while CATL employs air-cooled packs primarily targeting the ride-hailing market, Li said.
