China's passenger new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales continued to see year-on-year growth last month, fell from September as hybrid models remained the drag on overall performance.
Passenger NEV retail sales came in at 1.282 million units in October, up 7.3 percent year-on-year but down 1.3 percent from September, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
This figure falls below the CPCA's preliminary data of 1.4 million units released earlier this month and its estimate of 1.32 million units published late last month.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) recorded retail sales of 812,000 units in October, up 20.4 percent year-on-year but down 2.5 percent from September.
BEVs accounted for 63.3 percent of total NEV retail sales in October, up 0.4 percentage points from September's 63.7 percent.
Hybrid vehicles, including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), recorded retail sales of 469,000 units in October, down 9.96 percent year-on-year but up 0.21 percent from September.
This marks the fourth consecutive month of year-on-year decline in hybrid vehicle retail sales.
After excluding EREVs, PHEV retail sales were 361,000 units in October, accounting for 28.16 percent of NEV retail sales.
PHEV retail sales decreased by 10.3 percent year-on-year, marking the fourth consecutive month of decline, though they increased by 0.1 percent compared to September.
EREV retail sales in October were 109,000 units, accounting for 8.50 percent of NEV retail sales. This represents a 7.7 percent year-on-year decrease, the fourth consecutive monthly decline, but a 3.3 percent increase compared to September.
China's passenger vehicle retail sales, including sedans, SUVs (sport utility vehicles), and MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles), totaled 2.242 million units in October, down 0.8 percent year-on-year and down 0.1 percent month-on-month.
NEV retail penetration in China were 57.2 percent in October, up 4.3 percentage points year-on-year but down 0.6 percentage points from September.
Domestic brands achieved 77.9 percent NEV retail penetration in October, while luxury brands reached 22.2 percent and mainstream joint-venture brands 7 percent.
China's passenger NEV wholesale sales reached 1.621 million units in October, up 18.5 percent year-on-year and up 8.5 percent month-on-month.
The wholesale penetration rate for NEVs in October was 55.3 percent, rising 5.1 percentage points year-on-year and up 1.8 percentage points month-on-month.
Domestic Chinese brands saw a wholesale penetration rate of 70.1 percent for NEVs in October, compared to 39.1 percent for luxury brands and 7.1 percent for mainstream joint-venture brands.
Passenger NEVs exported from China reached 250,000 units in October, surging 104 percent year-on-year and up 19 percent month-on-month, contributing 44.2 percent of total passenger vehicle exports.
BEVs contributed 64 percent of October's NEV exports, down from 81 percent in the same period last year.
A0-segment and A00-segment BEV exports accounted for 37 percent of NEV exports, up from 42 percent year-on-year.
