Gotion High-tech (SHE: 002074) has commenced construction of its Slovakian battery factory, following the announcement of the plan last December to expand its production capacity in Europe.

Located in the Slovak city of Šurany, the facility commenced construction on October 28 local time. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Gotion chairman Li Zhen attended a groundbreaking ceremony, according to a statement released today.

The project marks Slovakia's first-ever mega-scale battery factory, spanning 65 hectares.

Phase one of the facility is designed for a capacity of 20 GWh, with trial production scheduled for 2026 and full-scale production commencing in 2027.

Products will primarily be exported to the EU market, creating 1,300 new jobs in the Šurany region during the initial phase.

Fico said that the plant represents one of the largest investment projects in Slovakia's history, marking the beginning of a new era for the automotive industry.

Gotion announced on December 12, 2024, plans to invest a total of €2.514 billion ($2.91 billion) to build battery production bases in Slovakia and Morocco.

The Slovakian project involves a total investment not exceeding €1.234 billion, with an annual lithium-ion battery capacity of 20 GWh, according to a stock exchange announcement at the time.

The Slovakian facility will be developed by Gotion InoBat Batteries (GIB) EnergyX Slovakia, a joint venture where Gotion holds an 80 percent stake and local battery company InoBat Auto jsa holds the remaining 20 percent. Gotion acquired a 25 percent stake in InoBat in September 2023.

The planned total investment for the yet-to-break-ground Morocco battery plant would not exceed €1.28 billion, with an annual capacity also set at 20 GWh.

The Morocco project would be constructed by Gotion Power Morocco, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gotion, located in the Rabat region of Morocco.

Gotion ranks as one of the world's largest EV battery manufacturers, holding a 3.6 percent market share from January to August and ranking seventh globally, according to data from South Korean market research firm SNE Research.

In China, Gotion ranked fourth in September with a 5.83 percent market share.
