Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) has revealed more details about its extended-range X9 MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) as its debut approaches.
The X9 extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) combines a 63.3-kWh battery pack with a 60-liter fuel tank to deliver a 1,602-kilometer range, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker announced today on Weibo.
The seven-seat MPV serves as Xpeng's global flagship model and its first super extended-range product, the company said.
Xpeng chairman and CEO then explained on Weibo why the company is launching EREVs, noting that Xpeng is a globally oriented AI automotive company facing varying infrastructure, customer demands, and regulatory policies across different regions.
The company must adopt diverse technological approaches to meet global user demands, Mr. He wrote.
The X9 EREV has undergone rigorous validation across complex environments in multiple countries, aiming to deliver more efficient and flexible mobility experiences worldwide, he said.
In August, an image shared by Mr. He on Weibo hinted at a potential 450-kilometer battery range for the model.
Xpeng launched the Kunpeng Super Electric System in November 2024, claiming vehicles equipped with it would achieve up to 1,400 kilometers of combined range and 430 kilometers of battery range.
The X9 EREV will be the first in Xpeng's lineup of EREV models. Last month, Mr. He said on Weibo that the model would officially debut in October.
The X9 was launched in China on January 1, 2024, as Xpeng's first MPV model.
The EREV variant of the X9 appeared in an August regulatory catalog from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), revealing dimensions of 5,316 mm in length, 1,988 mm in width, and 1,785 mm in height, with a 3,160 mm wheelbase.
It is longer than the all-electric Xpeng X9's 5,293 mm length, with other dimensions remaining identical.
Xpeng also filed for an EREV version of its G7 SUV last month, followed by EREV variants of the G6 SUV and P7+ sedan earlier this month.
To date, Xpeng has filed EREV variants for four existing models.
The X9 EREV will be one of China's hybrid models featuring an exceptionally large battery capacity, catering to consumer preferences for longer battery ranges in such vehicles.
On October 16, Leapmotor (HKG: 9863) debuted its flagship SUV D19, with its EREV variants utilizing an 80.3-kWh battery pack.
Voyah, the premium EV division of Dongfeng Motor (HKG: 0489), launched the 2026 Dream MPV on September 15, featuring a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version equipped with a battery pack of up to 62.5 kWh.
