China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales set a new record last month as battery electric vehicles (BEVs) maintained robust growth.
In September, China's NEV sales reached 1,604,000 units, surpassing the previous record of 1,596,000 units set in December 2024, according to data released today by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).
This represents a 24.6 percent year-on-year increase and a 15.0 percent rise from August.
The NEV sales figures released by CAAM represent automakers' wholesale sales, including both domestic sales in China and exports to overseas markets. NEVs include BEVs, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles.
BEV sales reached a record 1,058,000 units in September, surpassing the one-million mark for the first time. This represents a 36.4 percent year-on-year increase and a 16.52 percent rise from August.
PHEV sales totaled 546,000 units in September, up 6.7 percent year-on-year and 12.11 percent from August.
Total vehicle sales in China reached 3.226 million units in September, up 14.9 percent year-on-year and 12.9 percent month-on-month.
This translates to a NEV penetration rate of 49.7 percent in September, higher than the 45.8 percent recorded in the same period last year and the 48.8 percent in August.
NEV exports continued their robust growth, surging 100 percent year-on-year to 222,000 units in September. This marks the fifth consecutive month of over 100 percent year-on-year growth in China's NEV exports.
After excluding exports, domestic NEV sales in September reached 1,382,000 units, up 17.5 percent year-on-year and 18.0 percent month-on-month.
In September, 652,000 vehicles were exported from China, representing a 21.0 percent increase year-on-year and a 6.7 percent rise month-on-month.
China exported 153,000 BEVs in September, up 72.3 percent year-on-year and 6.6 percent month-on-month.
PHEV exports reached 69,000 units in September, surging 220 percent year-on-year but declining 14.3 percent month-on-month.
