Chinese autonomous driving technology company WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD) and its partner, Southeast Asian super app Grab (NASDAQ: GRAB), will jointly launch a robotaxi service in Singapore to expand its international footprint.
WeRide announced yesterday that it will partner with Grab to launch an autonomous ride-hailing service named Ai.R (Autonomously Intelligent Ride) in Singapore.
Selected by Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA), this project marks Singapore's first autonomous shuttle service in residential areas, serving residents along two designated routes in Punggol.
Ai.R is the sole autonomous shuttle project selected for Punggol's two routes, initially deploying 11 robotaxis, according to a statement.
The Ai.R fleet will utilize two WeRide products: the five-passenger Robotaxi GXR and the eight-passenger Robobus.
Both vehicles have achieved Singapore's Milestone 1 (M1) certification, making them among the first autonomous vehicles specifically certified for Punggol service, WeRide said.
Starting this week, Ai.R vehicles will undergo extensive route familiarization testing in Punggol, with each autonomous vehicle accompanied by a Grab safety operator.
Once operational, passengers can view Ai.R vehicle schedules and track real-time locations within the Grab App.
Founded in 2017, WeRide is one of China's earliest companies specializing in advanced smart driving solutions. It was listed on the Nasdaq on October 25, 2024.
On August 15, the company announced a multi-million-dollar equity investment commitment from Grab, with the transaction expected to close in the first half of 2026.
Separately, WeRide announced today its inclusion in the Nasdaq Golden Dragon China Index (Nasdaq: HXC).
By becoming part of this key benchmark index for US-listed Chinese companies, WeRide expects to enhance its visibility among investors and strengthen its capital market standing, it said.
