Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model Y retail sales in China continued to decline last month, ahead of deliveries for the six-seat Model Y L.
Model Y retail sales in China came in at 39,413 units in August, down 13.05 percent year-on-year, though up 28.11 percent from July, according to data compiled by CnEVPost from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
This marks the second consecutive month of year-on-year retail sales decline for the Tesla SUV in China.
The model is one of Tesla's most important, particularly in the Chinese market where consumers favor SUVs with larger interior space.
This year, the Model Y's performance in China has weakened, with retail sales declining year-on-year in six of the first eight months -- March and June being the only exceptions -- according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
This has also contributed to the Model Y's overall sales decline in China this year. From January to August, the SUV's retail sales in China totaled 241,670 units, down 16.51 percent year-on-year.
Notably, sales for the Model Y lineup are expected to improve with the Model Y L beginning deliveries this month.
Tesla launched the Model Y L in China on August 19, introducing the six-seat SUV as a new variant alongside the existing five-seat model.
On September 2, Tesla announced the Model Y L deliveries began in China.
On September 3, local media outlet Cailian reported that Model Y L orders had reached 120,000 since its August 19 launch, averaging nearly 10,000 orders per day.
Tesla exported 19,475 Model Y units from China in August, marking a 77.38 percent year-on-year increase and a 29.21 percent rise from July.
From January to August, the SUV saw 77,090 units exported from China, an 18.15 percent year-on-year growth.
Tesla operates a Shanghai factory producing the Model 3 sedan and Model Y, serving both domestic deliveries and export operations.
Model 3 retail sales in China totaled 17,739 units in August, down 2.14 percent year-on-year -- marking the fourth consecutive month of year-on-year decline -- but up 80.07 percent from July.
From January to August, Model 3 retail sales in China totaled 119,509 units, a 21.26 percent increase year-on-year.
The Tesla sedan exported 6,565 units from China in August, down 46.46 percent year-on-year and 46.18 percent month-on-month.
From January to August, Model 3 exports totaled 77,283 units, a 42.41 percent year-on-year decrease.
