BYD's (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) ultra-luxury sub-brand Yangwang has set a new global electric vehicle (EV) top speed record, showcasing its technological prowess.

A Yangwang U9 electric supercar engineering test vehicle achieved a speed of 472.41 km/h, setting a new world record for EV top speed, the BYD sub-brand announced today.

This achievement was accomplished by German professional racing driver Marc Basseng on August 8 at Germany's ATP test track.

The test vehicle utilizes the world's first mass-produced 1200-volt ultra-high voltage platform, paired with a vehicle thermal management solution optimized for extreme operating conditions to enhance track performance, BYD said in an announcement.

The test vehicle's e4 powertrain represents the world's first quad-motor platform based on 30,000-rpm high-performance motors, with each motor delivering peak power of up to 555 kW.

This powertrain provides the vehicle with over 3,000 Ps of combined horsepower, enabling the test vehicle to achieve a power-to-weight ratio of 1,217 Ps/t -- a world-leading standard in the automotive industry, BYD stated.

Launched in China on February 25, 2024, the two-seat electric supercar starts at RMB 1.68 million ($234,630).

It features four motors, each delivering a peak power of 240 kW, for a combined peak output of 960 kW.

Its powertrain generates up to 1,288 horsepower and 1,680 Nm of torque, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.36 seconds.

In August 2024, the Yangwang U9 achieved a top speed of 375.12 km/h during track testing. Two months later, in October, the electric supercar reached a top speed of 391.94 km/h.

These top speed records surpass the 350 km/h speed of China's high-speed rail -- the fastest speed ordinary people can experience outside of air travel.

Earlier this month, Yangwang filed for a new U9 variant equipped with four motors -- the same configuration as the current production model -- but with each motor's power output doubled.

The four motors in the new Yangwang U9 each deliver a peak power of 555 kW, 2.3 times the 240 kW output of the current production model.

Six U9 units were delivered in July, bringing cumulative deliveries to 173 units, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
