Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) will unveil its all-new ES8 SUV (sport utility vehicle) on August 21, updating its first mass-produced model to the third generation.
The product and technology showcase for the new ES8 will begin at 7:30 pm Beijing time on August 21, the electric vehicle (EV) maker announced today.
The event will take place in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan province, and will focus on the product and technology highlights of the new ES8, which will officially go on sale next month at Nio Day 2025.
Nio founder, chairman, and CEO William Li is currently driving the new ES8 with his team to the foot of Mount Everest to prove that the SUV can be used as conveniently as a gasoline-powered car with the support of the company's battery swap network.
Today is the sixth day of their journey, and the new ES8 fleet has traveled 1,723 kilometers, Li said on Weibo today.
The ES8 is Nio's first mass-produced model, and the first generation based on the NT 1.0 platform was launched on December 16, 2017, at Nio Day 2017, making it one of the first high-end cars from a local Chinese automaker.
The second-generation ES8 was launched on December 24, 2022, at Nio Day 2022, transitioning to the NT 2.0 platform.
The model is Nio's current flagship SUV, with a starting price of RMB 498,000 ($69,450) including the battery pack.
The third-generation Nio ES8 entered a regulatory filing catalog of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in June, showing that it is larger than its predecessor.
The SUV, available in six- and seven-seat configurations, measures 5,280 mm in length, 2,010 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,250 mm.
Its predecessor measured 5,099 mm in length, 1,989 mm in width, and 1,750 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,070 mm.
The new ES8 will be equipped with a 102-kWh battery pack with a CLTC range of 635 kilometers. The battery pack is the same one currently used in Nio's executive flagship sedan, the ET9.
Last month, Nio announced that it would move its most important annual event, Nio Day, to this fall instead of the usual end of the year, partly to prepare for the launch of the new ES8.
In the first seven months of this year, the ES8 delivered 4,199 units, a year-on-year decrease of 19.94 percent, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
Notably, the SUV delivered 1,090 units in July alone, marking a new high since January 2024.
