Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) will debut its next-generation P7 electric sedan in a week's time, updating one of its most important models.
The all-new Xpeng P7 will make its China debut in Beijing on August 6, the electric vehicle (EV) maker announced today.
Xpeng is headquartered in Guangzhou, southern China. Its local peer Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) is headquartered in Beijing.
Xpeng has not yet announced the start time for the new P7's debut event, though it typically takes place in the evening Beijing time.
The company began teasing the new P7 coupe sedan, internally codenamed E29, in May, saying at that time the model would launch in the third quarter, targeting a price point of RMB 300,000 ($41,820).
The new P7 is also model targeting the global market, with Xpeng stating on May 15 that it would determine market availability based on the needs of different countries and regions.
The sedan entered China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) regulatory catalog at the end of May, revealing that the five-seat electric sedan measures 5,017 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,427 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,008 mm.
These dimensions are similar to those of Xpeng's other sedan, the P7+, which measures 5,056 mm in length, 1,937 mm in width, and 1,512 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm.
The new P7 is based on the same E platform as the G9 SUV (sport utility vehicle) and will not be equipped with any LiDAR, but can achieve assisted driving functions on urban roads and highways, according to the company.
Xpeng currently sells the Mona M03, P7+, and P7i sedans, with the Mona M03 and P7+ being the main models.
The P7+ focuses on family use and offers more space, while the new P7 is more comprehensive and personalized in terms of intelligence and performance, Xpeng said previously.
The first-generation P7 made its debut at the Shanghai auto show in April 2019 and was officially launched in April 2020.
As Xpeng's first sedan, the P7's stylish exterior design has earned it a good reception since its launch.
Both the first-generation P7 and the new P7 were designed by Xpeng's head of creative design, Rafik Ferrag, who joined Xpeng in 2018.
The exterior design of the new P7 is considered bold, as the hard lines at the rear are quite different from mainstream sedans currently available in China.
This is a risky move because it is difficult to determine whether people will accept it, but it also gives the model a unique selling point.
