The model is one of Tesla's most important, especially in the Chinese market where consumers increasingly prefer SUVs (sport utility vehicles) with larger interior spaces.

Compared to May, the Model Y's retail sales in China last month increased by 81.06 percent.

Since the Model Y produced at the Shanghai factory began deliveries in January 2021, it has maintained strong delivery performance in most months.

However, the Tesla SUV's performance in China has weakened this year, with retail sales declining year-on-year in four out of the first five months. The only month without a decline, March, saw a mere 0.57 percent year-on-year increase, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

This has also led to a decline in the Model Y's cumulative sales in China this year. From January to June, the SUV's retail sales in China totaled 171,491 units, down 17.48 percent year-on-year.

Meanwhile, Tesla's exports of the Model Y from China saw a year-on-year growth in June.

The Model Y exported 6,405 units in June, up 125.45 percent year-on-year, though down 56.60 percent from May.
