
BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) maintained its position as China's largest new energy vehicle (NEV) maker in June, and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) saw an improvement in its ranking compared to May.
BYD's NEV retail sales in June totaled 352,081 units, up 25.7 percent year-on-year and up 20.2 percent from May, according to rankings released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The company maintained its top position with a 31.7 percent market share in June, up from 28.5 percent in May but below the 32.7 percent recorded in June 2024.
Tesla's retail sales in China in June came in at 61,484 units, up 3.8 percent year-on-year and up 59.3 percent from May.
The US electric vehicle (EV) maker ranked fourth in China's NEV market in June with a 5.5 percent market share, up four spots from eighth place in May.
This share was higher than the 3.8 percent recorded in May but lower than the 6.9 percent from the same period last year.
Geely's NEV retail sales in June totaled 114,798 units, up 80.7 percent year-on-year, though down 12.0 percent from May. Its 10.3 percent share in June kept it in second place in NEV retail sales.
In China, NEVs include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel cell vehicles.
BYD and Geely produce both BEVs and PHEVs, while Tesla only produces BEVs.
Changan Automobile ranked third in China's NEV market in June with 76,346 NEV retail sales and a 6.9 percent market share.
In the first six months of the year, BYD led China's NEV market with 1,610,042 retail sales and a 29.4 percent market share.
Geely ranked second in China's NEV market in the first half of the year with 685,788 retail sales and a 12.5 percent market share.
Changan ranked third in China's NEV market in the first half of the year with 367,521 NEV sales and a 6.7 percent market share.
Tesla ranked fifth in China's NEV market in the first half of the year with 263,410 units sold and a 4.8 percent market share.
In the overall passenger vehicle market, which includes traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, BYD ranked first in retail sales in June with a 16.9 percent market share.
Geely ranked second in June with 195,537 units sold and a 9.4 percent market share.
FAW-Volkswagen ranked third with 142,913 units sold and a 6.9 percent market share.
Tesla ranked tenth in the overall market with a 2.9 percent market share.
