Nio (NYSE: NIO) has reached its 100,000th car delivered in Shanghai, marking a milestone for the electric vehicle (EV) maker in the city where it has its global headquarters.
William Li, the company's founder, chairman and CEO, announced the milestone in a short Weibo video today, and Nio also shared the moment on its mobile app.
This comes seven years after the delivery of the first Nio ES8 in Shanghai in 2018, Nio said.
In Shanghai's car market with prices above 300,000 yuan ($41,140), Nio has become the first Chinese brand to reach the 100,000th unit delivery milestone, it said.
Since 2024, for every two pure electric vehicles sold in Shanghai priced above RMB 300,000, there is Nio vehicle, the company said.
There are already 10 Nio car clubs and over 500 user communities in Shanghai, it said.
Nio is headquartered in Jiading district, northwest of Shanghai, which is one of the most EV-friendly cities. By the end of March, Nio's cumulative deliveries stood at 713,658 units.
Shanghai offers free green license plates for EV models, while registering a gasoline or hybrid vehicle requires an auction to obtain a blue plate, which sold for a minimum of RMB 94,100 yuan in the latest March auction.
Yesterday, the city announced it expanded the coverage of its car trade-in subsidy, allowing non-locally registered vehicles to be used to apply for the subsidy of up to RMB 15,000.
Previously, Shanghai only allowed vehicles registered in the city to be used to apply for the subsidy.
Shanghai is one of the cities with the most Nio battery swap stations, with 187 so far. The company currently has 3,259 battery swap stations in China.
These stations in Shanghai have cumulatively provided more than 7.66 million battery swap services, Nio said.
Nio's battery swap stations in Shanghai were already largely close to profitability, Li said in a February 8 live video broadcast.
The Shanghai stations provided more than 9,000 battery swaps a day, Shen Fei, former head of Nio Power, said in the same live video.
Currently, in most parts of Shanghai, it's profitable to build new battery swap stations, Shen said at the time.
Shen replaced Alan Ai as president of Nio's sub-brand Onvo earlier this month, and Nio Power is now overseen by Nio CFO Stanley Qu.
