BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) maintained its position as China's largest new energy-vehicle (NEV) maker in March, and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) saw a significant rise to No. 3, according to the China Passenger Car Association's (CPCA) 's latest rankings.
BYD had retail sales of 290,209 NEVs in March, up 11.5 percent from 260,300 in the same month last year, according to the CPCA's rankings released today.
The company continued to be No. 1 in March with a 29.3 percent share, up from February's 29.2 percent, though down from 36.6 percent in March 2024.
Tesla's retail sales in China were 74,127 units in March, up 18.8 percent from 62,398 in the same month last year.
The US electric vehicle (EV) maker ranked No. 3 in China's NEV market in March with a 7.5 percent share, up from a 3.8 percent share in February but down from 8.8 percent a year earlier.
Tesla moved up four spots in China's NEV market in March compared to its No. 7 ranking in February.
Geely's retail sales of NEVs in March were 110,894 units, up 165.3 percent from 41,802 in the same month last year, and ranked No. 2 with an 11.2 percent share.
In China, NEVs include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEV), and fuel cell vehicles.
BYD and Geely both produce BEVs and PHEVs, while Tesla only produces BEVs.
Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) ranked No. 7 in China's NEV market in March, with 36,674 units sold and a 3.7 percent share.
Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) ranked No. 10 in China's NEV market in March, with 30,102 units sold and a 3.0 percent share.
Li Auto makes both extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) and BEVs, while Xpeng only has BEVs at the moment, although it will launch an EREV model later this year.
In the January-March period, BYD ranked No. 1 in China's NEV market with retail sales of 696,162 units and a 28.8 percent share.
Geely ranked No. 2 in China's NEV market with 321,779 units sold and 13.3 percent share in January-March.
SAIC-GM-Wuling ranked No. 3 in China's NEV market with 156,871 units sold and 6.5 percent share in January-March.
Tesla was No. 5 in China's NEV market with 134,607 units sold and 5.6 percent share in January-March.
In the overall passenger car market, which includes traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, BYD ranked No. 1 in retail sales with a 15.0 percent share.
Geely was No. 2 in the overall passenger car market in March with 195,130 units sold and 10.1 percent share.
FAW-Volkswagen was No. 3 with 129,571 units sold and 6.7 percent share.
