BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) will officially launch the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV (sport utility vehicle) on Wednesday, after starting pre-sales of the two ultra-fast charging models last month.

The Han L and Tang L will be officially launched on April 9, and a launch event will begin at 7 pm Beijing time that day, BYD announced yesterday on Weibo.

"The Han L will fulfill all the imaginations of young people with one car," BYD wrote.

The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker said in a poster that the Han L and Tang L will be epoch-making flagship products.

Pre-sales of both models began on March 17, with the all-electric Han L EV having a pre-sales price range of RMB 270,000 ($37,080) to RMB 350,000. The pure electric Tang L EV has a pre-sales price range of RMB 280,000 to RMB 360,000 yuan.

They are the first models to be built on BYD's Super e-Platform, which uses a flash-charging battery that supports a 10C charging multiplier, claiming to make charging as fast as refueling a gasoline car.

The battery supports charging voltages of up to 1,000 V and charging currents of up to 1,000 A, allowing charging power of up to 1,000 kW (kilowatt), both the highest in the world, according to the company.

1,000 kW is 1 MW (megawatt), which BYD said is the first time the industry has used MW as a unit of measurement for EV charging power.

BYD announced at the time a supercharger supporting 1,000 kW of power, which it said could add 2 kilometers of range to an EV in one second, or 400 kilometers in five minutes.

On March 26, a BYD executive said 4,000 units of 1-MW flash charging stations were in deployment, with the first batch of about 500 to be ready to go when the Han L and Tang L SUVs go on sale in early April.

The Super e-Platform also has a new high-revving motor that spins at up to 30,511 revolutions per minute, the highest of any mass-produced motor in the world, BYD said.

The motor has a peak power of up to 580 kW, the highest of any mass-produced motor in the world, exceeding the performance of a V12 fuel engine, according to the company.

Both models boast strong performance, with the Han L EV accelerating from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 2.7 seconds and the Tang L EV in 3.6 seconds.

The Han L EV has a length, width and height of 5,050 mm, 1,960 mm and 1,505 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,970 mm, as previously announced. The Tang L EV has a length, width and height of 5,040 mm, 1,996 mm and 1,760 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,950 mm.

Both models are equipped with BYD's God's Eye B smart driving System, with the hardware including a roof-mounted LiDAR.

In addition to the Han L EV and Tang L EV, BYD also began accepting customer reservations for the hybrid Han L DM and Tang L DM on March 17, but no pricing information had been released.

The Han L DM and Tang L DM will be equipped with the most powerful variants of BYD's DM hybrid technology, and the cars can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.9 seconds and 4.3 seconds, respectively.

BYD sold 377,420 NEVs in March, up 24.78 percent year-on-year and up 16.90 percent from February, according to figures it announced on April 1.

The Han family sold 15,385 units in March, down 23.12 percent year-on-year and down 12.73 percent from February.

The Tang family sold 10,411 units in March, down 26.05 percent year-on-year while up 3.33 percent from February.

In 2024, the Han family sold 258,452 units and contributed 6.05 percent of BYD's NEV sales, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

The Tang family sold 153,365 units in 2024, contributing 3.59 percent of BYD's NEV sales.
