BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has expanded its fleet of car carriers to include six vessels as the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker continues to step up its efforts to expand in international markets.

The BYD Xi'an car carrier was officially launched on April 2, the company announced yesterday.

Meanwhile, the world's largest car ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) ship, BYD Shenzhen, is about to make its maiden voyage, it wrote on Weibo.

BYD didn't mention more information, including BYD Xi'an's loading capacity, but shared three images of BYD Shenzhen and BYD Xi'an in the same frame.

This is BYD's first mention of BYD Xi'an, the sixth ship in the company's fleet that has been made public, and its fifth car carrier named after the city where one of its car production bases is located.

Xi'an is the capital city of Shaanxi province, where BYD has one of its largest auto production facilities.

The BYD Explorer No. 1 is the first vessel in BYD's fleet and has a capacity of 7,000 vehicles. The vessel, which entered service in January 2024, was chartered to BYD by another shipowner.

BYD Hefei is BYD's first car carrier as a shipowner and the first to be named after a city where one of its vehicle production sites is located, with a capacity of 7,000 vehicles.

BYD Hefei completed construction at the end of September 2024 and began its maiden voyage on January 7 of this year, sailing to Europe with nearly 5,000 NEVs.

BYD Changzhou, launched in October 2024, is the second BYD vessel named after a vehicle production site after BYD Hefei.

The 7,000-vehicle-capable BYD Changzhou went into service in December 2024, with its maiden voyage carrying 5,000 NEVs to Europe.

BYD Shenzhen, with a capacity of 9,200 vehicles, is the world's largest automotive ro-ro ship and completed its un-docking on January 15.

BYD Changsha is the fifth in BYD's fleet and its second car carrier with a capacity of 9,200 vehicles.

On March 17, the company said the BYD Changsha car carrier would soon be launched.

BYD has seen strong sales growth over the past few years, quickly becoming the world's largest NEV maker and has seen global passenger battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales overtake Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) for two consecutive quarters.

As its sales growth slows in the domestic market, BYD is continuing to ramp up its efforts to expand overseas.

BYD chairman and president Wang Chuanfu announced in a small group on March 25 that the company's 2025 vehicle sales target is 5.5 million units, including more than 800,000 in overseas markets, according to a story in local media outlet LatePost.

That overall target represents a roughly 29 percent increase from the 4,272,145 vehicles it sold in all of 2024. The overseas sales target represents a 92 percent increase from 417,204 vehicles in 2024.

BYD's car sales target for 2025 is 5.5 million units, including more than 800,000 in overseas markets, according to local media.
