BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) and Chinese drone maker DJI have launched a vehicle-mounted drone system that looks to turn vehicles into mobile entertainment spaces.

The new energy vehicle (NEV) maker today released the system called Ling Yuan, in Shenzhen, where it is headquartered, saying it is the first of its kind in the world.

The system integrates the drone with the vehicle, giving it a vertical field of view that allows it to track moments of travel.

Its hardware includes a drone hangar, a drone, an on-board positioning module handle, and BYD also provided the Ling Yuan App, AI recognition software, and image and music editing software.

The drone hangar is 0.29 square meters when the hangar apron is unfolded, and the thickness of the hangar is 21.5 cm.

The system supports dynamic takeoff and landing of drones at speeds up to 25 km/h and automatic return of drones within 2 km. The drone can follow a vehicle at speeds up to 54 km/h.

The drone can automatically return to recharge its battery when it is running low, from 20 percent to 80 percent in 30 minutes.

The Ling Yuan system is aimed at making the car more fun to drive.

BYD chairman and president Wang Chuanfu said at today's launch that consumers want more than just a means of transportation, but a mobile space for mobility, entertainment and socialization.

The Ling Yuan system will be available to all brands under the BYD umbrella and is priced at RMB 16,000 ($2,200).

The first models that support the system include the Yangwang U8, Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8, Fang Cheng Bao Tai 3, Denza N9, BYD Sealion 07 DM-i, and BYD Tang L.

The drone version of the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8 was launched today with a price range of RMB 395,800 to 423,800 yuan.

Yangwang launched the U8 Off-road Master Edition at the Beijing auto show on April 25, 2024, and one of its features is a drone cabin on the roof.

However, it is worth noting that the Yangwang U8 Off-road Master Edition is an ultra-luxury SUV (sport utility vehicle) with a starting price of RMB 1,098,000 ($151,060), the highest price under the BYD umbrella.

The release of the Ling Yuan system means that BYD's affordable models will also be able to get this configuration.
