China's retail sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) were modest last week, failing to stop the month-to-date decline.
In the February 1-23 period, China's passenger NEV retail sales amounted to 445,000 units, up 77 percent from a year earlier, but down 16 percent from a month earlier, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The higher year-on-year growth rate was mainly due to a low base resulting from last year's Chinese New Year holiday. Last year that holiday was February 10-17, and this year it was January 28-February 4.
In the February 1-16 period, China's passenger NEV retail sales were 263,000 units, up 79 percent from a year earlier, but 17 percent lower than the same period last month, CPCA data released last week showed.
So far this year, cumulative retail sales of China's passenger NEVs totaled 1.189 million units, up 29 percent from a year earlier.
Wholesale sales of China's passenger NEVs from February 1-23 were 517,000 units, up 128 percent from the same period last year but down 19 percent from the same period last month, according to the CPCA.
So far this year, China's cumulative wholesale sales of passenger NEVs were 1.406 million units, up 52 percent from the same period last year.
From February 1-23, China's retail sales of all passenger vehicles were 924,000 units, up 18 percent compared with the same period last year, but 30 percent lower than the same period last month.
So far this year, cumulative retail sales of all passenger cars in China totaled 2.718 million units, down 4 percent from a year earlier.
This means that China's NEV penetration at retail stood at 48.16 percent in the February 1-23 period and 43.75 percent year-to-date.
During February 1-9, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 26,528, down 31 percent year-on-year and 39 percent lower than the same period last month.
During February 10-16, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 48,910, up 91 percent year-on-year but down 17 percent from the same period last month.
During February 17-23, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 49,013, up 33 percent year-on-year but down 33 percent from the same period last month.
During February 1-23, China's wholesale sales of all passenger cars were 993,000 units, up 60 percent from a year earlier but 34 percent lower than the same period last month.
During February 1-9, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 24,379 units, flat year-on-year but 58 percent lower than the same period last month.
During February 10-16, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 52,656, up 169 percent year-on-year but down 21 percent from the same period last month.

So far this year, China's passenger car wholesale sales were 3.094 million units, up 13 percent from a year earlier.
