BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) teased the Han L a few days ago, but didn't provide details.
Now, a regulatory filing hints that the sedan will be one of BYD's most powerful models.
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released its latest catalog of models that will soon be allowed to be sold for public comment on January 10, and the BYD Han L is included.
The public can submit their feedback between January 11-17. Entry into the catalog is the last major regulatory process by which a model can be allowed to be sold in China.
The Han L has four pages in the catalog, including two battery electric vehicle (BEV) versions, with model numbers BYD7002ACBEV4 and BYD7002ACBEV5, and two plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) versions, with model numbers BYD7152ACHBEV5 and BYD7152ACHBEV5, respectively.
The Han L with the model number BYD7002ACBEV4 is equipped with dual electric motors, the front motor with a peak power of 230 kW and the rear motor with a peak power of 580 kW.
Peak power of 580 kW from a single motor is rare. In the last few years, motors with a peak power of 300 kW have been uncommon.
On December 28, 2023, Xiaomi unveiled the V8s motor at its EV tech event, claiming to have 578 PS of maximum horsepower and 425 kW of peak power, with 27,200 rpm being the most powerful in the world.
On January 7, Xiaomi announced the company's top award for the V8s motor development team, with a prize of RMB 10 million yuan ($1.36 million).
The Han L's motor is produced by BYD itself. There's no more information about the motor on its filing pages, but it has “2.7S” printed on the rear of the car, suggesting that the model can sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 2.7 seconds.
For reference, Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) most powerful model, the Model S Plaid with a starting price of RMB 814,900 in China, can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 2.1 seconds.
The BYD Han EV is currently on sale for around RMB 200,000. It is a single-motor front-drive model with a peak motor power of up to 180 kW, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.
The BYD Han L has a length, width and height of 5,050 mm, 1,960 mm and 1,505 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,970 mm.
It weighs between 2,095 kg and 2,466 kg and supports a top speed of 270 kilometers per hour.
The model is powered by lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries from BYD's battery division FinDreams Battery, with capacity information currently unknown.
The other variant of the Han L BEV, product number BYD7002ACBEV5, is powered by a single electric motor with a peak power of 500 kW.
Both its hybrid variants are powered by an engine with a displacement of 1,498 ml and a peak power of 115 kW.
One hybrid variant is powered by a single motor with a peak power of 200 kW, while the other hybrid variant is powered by dual motors, with a peak power of 200 kW both front and rear.
