As Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) rolls out the facelifted Model Y in China, the latest numbers show just how important the model is to it.

Model Y retail sales in China were 61,881 units in December, up 3.04 percent from 60,055 in December 2023 and up 38.82 percent from 44,576 in November, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) shared today by automotive media outlet Yiche.

For the full year of 2024, the Tesla crossover's retail sales in China were 480,309 units, up 5.24 percent from 456,394 in 2023.

That means the Model Y contributed 26.84 percent of Tesla's 1,789,226 global deliveries in 2024, CnEVPost's calculations show.

In the fourth quarter, Model Y retail sales in China amounted to 196,902, contributing 39.73 percent of Tesla's global deliveries of 495,570 for the quarter.

Tesla's retail sales in China for the full year of 2024 were 657,102 units, an 8.85 percent increase year-on-year.

Earlier today, Tesla launched the facelifted five-seat Model Y in China, marking the first time the US electric vehicle (EV) maker has made a major update to a model available first in the world's largest EV market.

Tesla began offering two variants it calls the “Launch Series” today, with deliveries expected to begin in March, pending regulatory approval.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y, with an annual production capacity that is its largest in the world at around 1 million units.

Since the locally produced Model Y began deliveries in January 2021, the model has become one of Tesla's most important.

Tesla China sold 916,660 vehicles, including exports, in 2024, a decrease of 3.28 percent year-on-year.

Model Y sales including exports were 494,705 in 2024, a 12.04 percent decrease from 2023.

This year-on-year decline is primarily due to a significant decrease in exports. Tesla China exported 76,380 Model Y units in 2024, a 54.58 percent decrease from 2023.

In December, Model Y exports fell to just 103 units, as Tesla prioritized deliveries of the crossover to Chinese customers.

Model 3 retail sales in China were up 33.63 percent to 21,046 units in December, down 27.21 percent from November.

For the full year 2024, Model 3 retail sales in China were 176,793 units, contributing 26.90 percent of Tesla's deliveries in China and 9.88 percent of global deliveries.

Alongside the launch of the facelifted Model Y, Tesla today raised the price of the Model 3 in China, and the entry-level version received a range upgrade.

For Tesla China's exports, the Model 3 made a bigger contribution.

For the full year of 2024, Tesla China exported 183,178 Model 3 units, up 4.14 percent from 2023, contributing 70.57 percent of Tesla China's 259,558 exports.

Model Y exports in 2024 contributed only 29.43 percent of Tesla China's exports.
