Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) reached an all-time high in retail sales in China last month, as it capitalized on the year-end car-buying rush.
Tesla China sold 93,766 vehicles in December, including 10,839 for export, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
That means the US electric vehicle (EV) maker sold 82,927 vehicles in China in December, an all-time high, CnEVPost's calculations show.
Tesla China had mentioned last week that it sold a record number of about 83,000 vehicles in China in December, without providing specific figures at the time.
Its sales in China last month were up 9.40 percent from 75,805 a year earlier and up 12.84 percent from 73,490 in November.
Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that makes the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, both for deliveries to local customers and as an export hub for it.
Tesla's pattern is to produce cars for export in the first half of the quarter and for the local market in the second half, it previously said.
The Shanghai plant's exports in December were down 40.88 percent from 18,334 in the same month last year while up 101.99 percent from 5,366 in November.
Tesla China's overall sales including exports in December were down 0.40 percent from 94,139 a year ago while up 18.91 percent from 78,856 in November.
In the fourth quarter, Tesla's retail sales in China were 196,902, up 15.87 percent from a year ago and up 8.26 percent from the third quarter.
Its retail sales in China during the quarter contributed 39.73 percent of the 495,570 global deliveries.
Including exports, Tesla China sold 240,902 in the fourth quarter, contributing 48.61 percent of Tesla's global deliveries in the quarter.
For the full year 2024, Tesla China sold 916,660 vehicles, including exports, a 3.28 percent decrease from 2023.
The company sold 657,102 vehicles at retail in China in 2024, up 8.85 percent from 2023.
Its Shanghai plant exported 259,558 units in 2024, a 24.56 percent decrease from 2024.
