A number of local car companies have made donations to the relief effort for Tibet, which was hit by an earthquake yesterday that killed more than 120 people.
Nio (NYSE: NIO) announced yesterday that it and the Nio Users Foundation have made a combined donation of RMB 1 million yuan ($136,000) to provide emergency relief supplies and post-disaster reconstruction in the quake-stricken areas.
The company will closely monitor the progress of relief efforts in the affected areas and provide whatever help it can, it said.
Nio is still loss-making, with a net loss of RMB 5.06 billion in the third quarter of 2024, essentially flat from the previous quarter, according to its earnings report.
A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri county of Shigatse in Tibet autonomous region, at 9:05 am on Tuesday at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The quake has killed 126 people, injured 188 and collapsed 3,609 homes, according to a report by the official Xinhua news agency last night.
Tibet had previously been referred to as “Tibet” in English, but from 2023 the Chinese foreign ministry and official media began referring to the autonomous region by the pinyin of its Chinese name, “Xizang”.
Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) announced yesterday that it has donated RMB 5 million yuan to the China Charity Federation to support relief and reconstruction efforts in the earthquake-stricken region of Tibet.
The company's financials are the best among the new local car makers, with net income of RMB 2.82 billion in the third quarter.
BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) announced yesterday that the BYD Charity Foundation has donated RMB 10 million to earthquake-stricken areas for emergency relief and post-disaster reconstruction.
The new energy vehicle (NEV) maker reported net income of RMB 11.61 billion for the third quarter.
Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) also announced today that it has donated RMB 1 million to the Guangzhou Charity Association for earthquake relief efforts.
In addition, Great Wall Motor yesterday announced a donation of RMB 5 million, GAC Group donated RMB 4 million, and Xiaomi Public Welfare Foundation donated RMB 1 million to support earthquake relief efforts.
