China's passenger new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales hit a new high in December, surpassing the 1 million mark for the fifth consecutive month.

Retail sales of passenger NEVs in China totaled 1.379 million units in December, up 46 percent from the same month in 2023 and up 10 percent from November, according to preliminary data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

For the full year 2024, cumulative retail sales of China's passenger NEVs totaled 10.98 million units, up 42 percent year-on-year, according to the CPCA.

Wholesale sales of passenger NEVs were 1.5 million units in December, up 35 percent from the same month in 2023 and up 5 percent from November.

For the full year 2024, cumulative wholesale sales of passenger NEVs in China totaled 12.22 million units, up 38 percent year-on-year.

In December, retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China were 2,622,000 units, up 11 percent compared to the same month in 2023 and up 9 percent from November.

For the full year of 2024, cumulative retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China were 22.88 million units, up 5 percent year-on-year.

This means that NEV penetration at retail in China was 52.6 percent in December and 47.97 percent in 2024.

In the first week of December -- December 1-8 -- average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 62,730, up 32 percent year-on-year and up 11 percent from the previous month.

In the second week of December -- December 9-15 -- average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 83,024, up 36 percent year-on-year and up 17 percent from the previous month.

In the third week of December -- December 16-22 -- average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 86,946, up 11 percent year-on-year and up 14 percent from the previous month.

In the fourth week of December -- December 23-31 -- average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 103,351, down 6 percent year-on-year and down 10 percent from the previous month.

In December, wholesale sales of all passenger cars in China were 3,064,000 units, up 13 percent year-on-year and up 5 percent from the same period last month.

During December 1-8, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 70,600, up 55 percent year-on-year and up 6 percent from the previous month.

During December 9-15, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 81,826, up 26 percent year-on-year and up 1 percent from the previous month.

During December 16-22, China's average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars were 90.364, up 16 percent year-on-year but down 2 percent from the previous month.

During December 23-31, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 143,768, down 4 percent year-on-year and down 3 percent from the previous month.

In 2024, China's passenger car wholesale sales were 27.18 million units, up 6 percent year-on-year.

The CPCA is expected to release more detailed monthly figures tomorrow.
