IM Motors gets L4 autonomous driving road test license

The SAIC Motor Corp's electric vehicle (EV) division announced on December 18, 2023, that it was approved to conduct L3 autonomous vehicle testing in Shanghai.

IM Motors would conduct L3 autonomous driving road tests in designated areas to accelerate the development of higher-order smart driving products and meet user demand for higher-level smart driving vehicles, it said last year.

In July 2024, IM Motors' chief engineer for L4 autonomous driving programs, Yu Qiankun, said the company was building a third-generation robotaxi technology solution with SAIC's subsidiary Saike Intelligence.

Saike's robotaxi would enter stage 4.0 by 2025 and will be able to have L4 smart driving capabilities in major Chinese cities, Yu said.

IM Motors is applying to the Chinese industry regulator for L3 product entry, with its models expected to be among the first to begin L3 self-driving pilots.
