The 10-day 2024 Guangzhou auto show closed yesterday, with new energy vehicle (NEV) models once again attracting the spotlight, similar to other events in recent years.

The 22nd Guangzhou auto show ended on November 24, attracting 853,000 visitors, the event's organizers said in a WeChat post yesterday.

The show, which ran from November 15-24, featured 1,171 vehicles, including 512 NEVs, accounting for 43.7 percent of the total.

Nearly all the booths had NEV models on display, and such models have become the focus of industry, taking the center stage of the Guangzhou auto show and even the world's automotive industry, the article said.

China sold less than 100,000 NEVs in 2014, with a penetration rate of just 0.32 percent. After a decade of rapid development, NEV penetration has approached 40 percent from January to October this year, and even exceeded 50 percent in some months, the article noted.

The Guangzhou auto show began in 2003 and is held once a year in November, unlike the Shanghai and Beijing auto shows, which are held every two years.

The 2025 Guangzhou auto show will be held from November 21 to 30, 2025, the event's organizers said.

With the NEV industry growing rapidly, such models are now contributing about half of China's monthly passenger car sales.

Retail sales of Chinese passenger NEVs in October were 1.196 million units, the third consecutive month of more than 1 million, up 56.7 percent from a year earlier and up 6.4 percent from September, according to data released on November 8 by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 56.3 percent of all NEV retail sales in October, up 36.7 percent year-on-year to 673,000 units, and up 4.9 percent from September.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), excluding extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), accounted for 33.9 percent of all NEV retail sales in October with retail sales of 405,000 units, up 107.7 percent year-on-year and up 4.9 percent from September. This represents an increase of 107.7 percent year-on-year and 11.3 percent from September.

In November, retail sales of passenger NEVs in China are estimated at 1.28 million units, up 52 percent year-on-year and up 7 percent compared to October, according to CPCA estimates released on November 21.
