BYD expects to produce around 200 electric buses per year in Azerbaijan between 2025 and 2028.
BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) is to build a commercial vehicle manufacturing base in Azerbaijan, after securing an order for electric buses from the country earlier this year.
BYD signed an agreement with the Azerbaijani government on November 13 for an electric bus project, the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker announced yesterday.
The company will set up a commercial vehicle manufacturing base in Azerbaijan's Sumgait Industrial Park and expects to produce about 200 electric buses per year between 2025 and 2028.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the COP29 (29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change) event being held in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.
On the eve of COP29, BYD delivered 160 units of K9UD, a 12-meter electric bus built for COP29, according to the company.
The electric buses were put into operation in Baku, providing mobility services to participating dignitaries, entrepreneurs and media personnel from more than 80 countries around the world, BYD said.
BYD announced in July that it won an order for 160 units of its 12-meter electric bus K9UD from the Azerbaijani government's electric bus procurement program.
The Azerbaijani government would purchase 200 electric buses from BYD each year between 2025 and 2028 and assemble them locally, the Chinese NEV maker said at the time.
The BYD K9UD electric bus measures 12,200 mm in length, 2,550 mm in width and 3,300 mm in height and weighs 19.5 tons.
The vehicle is powered by a 422-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with a range of up to 450 km. It is equipped with two 150 kW electric motors.
As of October 2024, BYD's commercial vehicle footprint has spread to 96 countries and regions around the world, it said.
BYD ceased production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, switching to a focus on producing plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles.
The company sold 502,657 NEVs in October, which included 500,526 passenger NEVs and 2,131 commercial vehicles.
In the January-October period, BYD sold 13,605 commercial vehicles, up 34.42 percent year-on-year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
