CATL and BYD continued to hold the top two positions as the world's largest battery makers in the January-August period, with the former seeing a slight decrease in share and the latter an increase.

In the January-August period, global electric vehicle (EV) battery usage totaled 510.1 GWh, up 21.7 percent from 419.1 GWh in the same period a year ago, according to data released on October 7 by South Korean market researcher SNE Research.
CATL's EV battery installations in the January-August period amounted to 189.2 GWh, up 27.2 percent from 148.8 GWh in the same period last year.
The Chinese power battery giant continued to rank first in the world with a 37.1 percent share and remains the only battery supplier in the world with a market share of more than 30 percent.
That was higher than its 35.5 percent share in the January-July 2023 period, but down from its 37.6 percent share in the January-July 2024 period.
BYD installed 83.9 GWh of power batteries in January-August, up 25.6 percent from 66.8 GWh in the same period last year.
The company ranked second in the January-August period with a 16.4 percent share, up from 15.9 percent in the same period last year and up from 16.1 percent in the January-July period.
For the share change between CATL and BYD, the latter's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales played a key role.
BYD sold a record 373,083 NEVs in August, up 35.97 percent year-on-year and up 8.97 percent from July.
In September, BYD sold 419,426 NEVs, its fourth consecutive record month.
BYD fell below LG Energy Solution in EV battery market share in the January-February period, but regained ground on the South Korean firm in the January-March period, as its NEV sales rebounded.
LG Energy Solution's power battery installations in the January-August period were up 2.5 percent year-on-year to 61.8 GWh.
The South Korean firm was third with a 12.1 percent share in the January-August period, down from 14.4 percent a year earlier and from 12.4 percent in the January-July period.
South Korea's SK On was fourth with a 4.8 percent share, China's CALB was fifth with a 4.8 percent share, and Japan's Panasonic was sixth with a 4.4 percent share.
South Korea's Samsung SDI, China's Eve Energy, Gotion High-tech, and Sunwoda ranked seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively, with shares of 4.2 percent, 2.6 percent, 2.2 percent, and 2.0 percent in the January-August period.
