Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) has added a new variant of its flagship SUV (sport utility vehicle), the G9, to cater to consumers who value power over smart driving capabilities.

The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker today launched the G9 650 Pro with a starting price of RMB 309,900 ($44,150).

The new four-wheel-drive variant is RMB 50,000, or 13.89 percent, cheaper than the top-of-the-line G9 650 Max at RMB 359,900 yuan.

It uses the same dual-motor four-wheel drive system as the G9 650 Max, with a combined maximum power of 405 kW and maximum torque of 717 Nm, and is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.

However, the new variant removes the two LiDARs on board the G9 650 Max and therefore does not support the XNGP (Navigation Guided Pilot) full-scenario assisted driving feature.

Still, the new variant supports assisted driving on highways, as well as having capabilities including ACC (autonomous cruise control) on regular roads.

The Xpeng G9 was initially launched on September 21, 2022. Its confusing configuration at the beginning triggered a great deal of dissatisfaction that overshadowed its appeal.

In September 2023, Xpeng launched the new G9, which was then offered in five variants with starting prices of RMB 263,900, RMB 283,900, RMB 289,900, RMB 309,900, and RMB 359,900 respectively.

With the addition of the new G9 650 Pro variant, the SUV is offered in three different range options -- 570 km, 702 km, and 650 km -- each of which includes a Pro variant and a Max variant.

The Pro variants of the Xpeng G9 does not carry LiDARs, while the Max versions carry the component, thereby supporting XNGP.

Except for the two variants with a range of 650 kilometers, all the other G9 variants come with a single motor.

Xpeng delivered 14,036 vehicles in August, up 2.53 percent year-on-year and up 25.94 percent from July, according to data released on September 1.

The G9 delivered 2,890 vehicles in August, contributing 20.59 percent of Xpeng's monthly deliveries, according to data compiled by CnEVPost. That's up 369.16 percent year-on-year, but down 4.65 percent from July.

In January-August, Xpeng delivered 77,209 vehicles, up 16.75 percent year-on-year.
