Retail sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China amounted to 214,000 units in the September 1-8 period, up 56 percent from a year ago and up 11 percent from a month ago, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

So far this year, cumulative retail sales of passenger NEVs in China totaled 6.223 million units, up 36 percent from the same period last year.

Wholesale sales of passenger NEVs from September 1-8 were 194,000 units, up 41 percent from the same period last year and up 28 percent from the same period last month, according to the CPCA.

So far this year, the cumulative wholesale sales of China's passenger NEVs amounted to 6.873 million units, up 32 percent from the same period last year.

From September 1-8, retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China were 388,000 units, up 10 percent compared with the same period last year and up 5 percent from the same period last month.

Year to date, cumulative retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China totaled 13.85 million units, up 2 percent year-on-year.

This means that the retail penetration of NEVs in China stood at 55.15 percent in the September 1-8 period and 44.92 percent year-to-date.

With the influx of cost-effective models from technological upgrades into China's auto market and the implementation of policies to boost consumption, demand for car purchases will be unleashed, CPCA said in the report today.

There are 21 working days in September this year, one more day relative to last year, so the effective selling time is longer, the report noted.

In the first week of September -- September 1-8 -- China's average daily retail sales of passenger cars was 48,475.

Wholesale sales of all passenger cars in China were 370,000 units from September 1-8, up 1 percent year-on-year and up 41 percent from the same period last month.

During September 1-8, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 46,248 units.

Cumulative year-to-date wholesale sales of passenger cars in China totaled 16.31 million units, up 4 percent year-on-year.
