China's passenger car new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales are on track to reach another record high in August, surpassing the 1 million milestone for the first time in history.

In August, retail sales of passenger NEVs in China totaled 1.015 million units, up 42 percent from the same month last year and up 16 percent from July, according to preliminary data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

This is the first time that the retail sales figure for passenger NEVs has exceeded the 1 million mark, surpassing the previous record of 947,347 units in December 2023.

So far this year, cumulative retail sales of China's passenger NEVs stood at 6,004,000 units, up 35 percent year-on-year, according to the CPCA.

Wholesale sales of China's passenger NEVs in August were 1,051,000 units, up 32 percent from a year ago and up 11 percent from July.

This will be the second time, and the first time this year, that passenger NEV wholesale sales have exceeded the 1 million mark. The current all-time record for this figure is 1,114,804 in December 2023.

So far this year, cumulative wholesale sales of passenger NEVs in China stood at 6,613,000 units, up 30 percent year-on-year.

In August, China's retail sales of all passenger vehicles amounted to 1.91 million units, 1 percent lower than the same month last year, but 11 percent higher than in July.

So far this year, cumulative retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China totaled 13.477 million units, up 2 percent year-on-year.

This means that retail penetration of NEVs in China was 53.14 percent in August and 44.55 percent year-to-date.

In July, China's NEV retail sales amounted to 878,000 units, the first time the penetration rate exceeded 50 percent on a monthly basis.

In the first week of August -- August 1-4 -- China's average daily passenger car retail sales were 41,015, up 2 percent year-on-year and up 5 percent from the same period in July.

In the second week of August -- August 5-11, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 50,984, up 10 percent year-on-year and up 23 percent from the same period in July.

In the third week of August -- August 12-18, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 55,201, up 8 percent year-on-year and up 16 percent from the same period in July.

In the fourth week of August -- August 19-25, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 56,813, flat from a year earlier and 4 percent lower than the same period in July.

In the fifth week of August -- August 26-31, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 100,833, 11 percent lower than the same period last year, but 16 percent higher than the same period in July.

In August, wholesale sales of all passenger cars in China were 2,128,000 units, down 5 percent from a year ago but up 8 percent from July.

During August 1-4, China's average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars were 24,432, down 31 percent year-on-year and down 12 percent from the same period in July.

During August 5-11, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 41,311, down 8 percent year-on-year but up 26 percent from the same period in July.

During August 12-18, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 52,826, down 2 percent year-on-year but up 11 percent from the same period in July.

During August 19-25, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 72,861, up 11 percent year-on-year and up 10 percent from the same period in July.

From August 26-31, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 143,587, down 9 percent year-on-year but up 4 percent from the same period in July.
