BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) saw record new energy vehicle (NEV) sales last month, as plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models continued to grow strongly.

The NEV maker sold a record 373,083 NEVs in August, surpassing July's previous record of 342,383 units, according to data it released today.

This represents a 35.97 percent increase year-on-year and an 8.97 percent increase from July.

BYD ceased production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, switching to a focus on the production of PHEVs and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

BYD's NEVs include passenger cars as well as commercial vehicles, with passenger NEVs selling 370,854 units in August, up 35.31 percent year-on-year and up 8.82 percent from July.

Its commercial NEVs sold 2,229 units in August, up 643 percent from a year ago and up 40.72 percent from July.

It sold 222,384 units of passenger PHEVs in August, the sixth consecutive record high since March. This represents a 73.12 percent year-on-year increase and a 5.5 percent increase from July.

The strong growth in sales of PHEVs may be due in part to increased production capacity of models equipped with the latest DM 5.0 technology.

BYD unveiled its DM 5.0 hybrid technology on May 28, which allows for lower fuel consumption, and has since launched a number of hybrid models equipped with the technology.

In August, BYD sold 31,451 vehicles in overseas markets, up 25.69 percent year-on-year and up 4.79 percent from July.

BYD first announced its overseas sales figures for NEVs in July 2022.

In addition to being China's largest NEV company, BYD is also China's second-largest power battery maker.

BYD's installed base of power and energy storage batteries amounted to about 18.846 GWh in August, up 35.31 percent year-on-year and up 14.09 percent from July.

Year-to-date performance

In the January-August period, BYD's NEV sales amounted to 2,328,449 units, up 29.92 percent year-on-year.

Its passenger NEVs sold 2,318,798 units in January-August, up 30.02 percent year-on-year.

Commercial NEVs sold 9,651 units in the first eight months, up 9.27 percent year-on-year.

BYD's passenger BEVs sold 1,004,623 units in January-August, surpassing the 1 million-unit mark, up 11.97 percent year-on-year.

Passenger PHEVs sold 1,314,175 units in January-August, up 48.3 percent year-on-year.

BYD sold 264,869 units overseas in January-August, up 125.46 percent year-on-year.

BYD's installed base of power and energy storage batteries amounted to about 107.920 GWh in January-August, up 24.64 percent year-on-year.
