Retail sales of passenger new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China amounted to 490,000 units in the August 1-18 period, up 58 percent from a year ago and up 27 percent from the same period last month, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

So far this year, cumulative retail sales of passenger NEVs in China totaled 5.478 million units, up 36 percent from the same period last year.

Wholesale sales of China's passenger NEVs from August 1-18 were 431,000 units, up 33 percent from the same period last year and up 21 percent from the same period last month, according to the CPCA.

So far this year, cumulative wholesale sales of China's passenger NEVs stood at 5.993 million units, up 30 percent from the same period last year.

From August 1-18, China's retail sales of all passenger vehicles were 907,000 units, up 8 percent compared with the same period last year and up 16 percent from the same period last month.

Year to date, cumulative retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China totaled 12.474 million units, up 3 percent year-on-year.

This means that China's NEV penetration at retail stood at 54.02 percent from August 1-18 and 43.92 percent year-to-date.

Since mid-to-late July, manufacturers and dealers have focused on reducing promotions and stabilizing prices, the CPCA said.

The current complex and volatile external environment has had an impact on consumer confidence, which is weak, with demand for first-time car purchases lower than trade-ins, the CPCA said.

In the first week of August -- August 1-4 -- China's average daily retail sales of passenger cars were 41,015, up 2 percent year-on-year and up 5 percent from the same period last month.

In the second week of August -- August 5-11, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 50,984, up 10 percent year-on-year and up 23 percent from the same period last month.

In the third week of August -- August 12-18, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 55,201, up 8 percent year-on-year and up 16 percent from the same period last month.

For August 1-18, China's wholesale sales of all passenger cars were 757,000 units, down 9 percent year-on-year but up 12 percent from the same period last month.

During August 1-4, China's average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars were 24,432, down 31 percent year-on-year and up 12 percent from the same period last month.

During August 5-11, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 41,311, down 8 percent year-on-year but up 26 percent from the same period last month.

From August 12-18, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 52,826, down 2 percent year-on-year, but up 11 percent from the same period last month.

Cumulative year-to-date wholesale sales of passenger cars in China totaled 14.477 million units, up 4 percent year-on-year.
