BYD has launched the Song L DM-i and the 2025 Song Plus DM-i, the second batch of DM 5.0-powered hybrid models after the Seal 06 DM-i and Qin L DM-i hybrid sedans.
BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has rolled out two new models to its best-selling Song family, both equipped with the latest DM 5.0 hybrid system.
The Chinese new energy-vehicle (NEV) maker officially launched the Song L DM-i and 2025 Song Plus DM-i at today's event, with both SUV (sport utility vehicle) models starting at RMB 135,800 ($18,770).
They are the second batch of hybrid models to switch to the fifth-generation DM technology, which BYD introduced on May 28, following the launch of the Seal 06 DM-i and Qin L DM-i hybrid sedans equipped with the technology.
The new generation DM hybrid system brings better fuel consumption performance and is expected to support BYD in gaining a bigger share in the fierce competition.
Song L DM-i
The BYD brand's model range includes the Dynasty and Ocean series, and the Song family models cover both series.
Previous Song family models in the Dynasty series include the all-electric Song L and the hybrid Song Pro DM-i, while the Song models in the Ocean series include the Song Plus DM-i and Song Plus EV.
The Song L DM-i is the newest member of the Song family in BYD's Dynasty series, while the 2025 Song Plus DM-i is part of the Ocean series.
Prior to the Song L DM-i hybrid SUV, BYD launched the Song L battery electric vehicle (BEV) on December 15, 2023, the second shooting brake style SUV under the BYD Group umbrella after the Denza N7.
Unlike the Song L BEV, the hybrid Song L DM-i looks more like a conventional SUV.
BYD is offering five variants of the Song L DM-i with starting prices of RMB 135,800, RMB 145,800, RMB 155,800, RMB 165,800 and RMB 175,800.
The model measures 4,780 mm in length, 1,898 mm in width and 1,670 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,782 mm.
It comes standard with a 1.5 L displacement engine with a maximum power of 74 kW and a maximum torque of 126 Nm.
All variants of the Song L DM-i are powered by a single electric motor, all with 160 kW of maximum power and 260 Nm of maximum torque.
Supported by this powertrain, the model can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds for the three less expensive variants and 7.9 seconds for the other two more expensive ones.
All five variants of the Song L DM-i are powered by BYD's blade batteries with capacities of 12.9 kWh, 18.3 kWh, 18.3 kWh, 26.6 kWh, 26.6 kWh, and CLTC battery ranges of 75 km, 112 km, 112 km, 160 km, and 160 km respectively.
It comes with a fuel tank with a capacity of 60 L across the board, and all of them have a low-charge fuel consumption of around 3.9 L under NEDC standards, and can achieve a combined range of around 1,500 km when fully fueled and charged.
2025 Song Plus DM-i
The 2025 Song Plus DM-i is the sister model of the Song L DM-i with similar dimensions and the same powertrain.
The model measures 4,775 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width and 1,670 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,765 mm.
The 2025 Song Plus DM-i is also offered in five variants with starting prices in line with the Song L DM-i at RMB 135,800, RMB 145,800, RMB 155,800, RMB 165,800, and RMB 175,800 respectively.
It also comes standard with an engine with a displacement of 1.5 L, and an electric motor with a maximum power of 160 kW, the same as the Song L DM-i.
The five variants of the 2025 Song Plus DM-i also feature the same battery packs as the Song L DM-i and have the same battery ranges.
It also has a 60 L fuel tank and a combined range of around 1,500 kilometers when fully fueled and charged.
The launch of the Song L DM-i and the 2025 Song Plus DM-i is expected to help gain a larger share of the domestic market where hybrid sales are growing faster than BEVs.
BYD sold 1,612,983 NEVs in the first half of the year, up 28.46 percent year-on-year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
The Song family, which sold 406,530 units in the first half of the year, was the top-selling BYD model, contributing 25.2 percent of the brand's sales.
By 2026, BYD could reach 6 million units delivered globally, including about 1.5 million in overseas markets, JPMorgan said in a July 9 research note.
