BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has secured a new batch of orders for electric buses, continuing to expand its footprint in electric commercial vehicles.

BYD recently won the Azerbaijani government's electric bus procurement program, securing an order for 160 units of 12-meter K9UD electric buses, according to a press release from the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker yesterday.

BYD plans to ship these electric buses to Azerbaijan in batches starting this month, some of which will be in service during the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) to be held in November in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.

Additionally, the Azerbaijani government will purchase 200 electric buses from BYD each year between 2025 and 2028 and assemble them locally.

In the future, the two sides plan to cooperate in local production, according to BYD.

The BYD K9UD electric bus measures 12,200 mm in length, 2,550 mm in width and 3,300 mm in height and weighs 19.5 tons.

The bus is powered by a 422-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack with a maximum range of 450 km. It is equipped with two 150 kW electric motors.

BYD proposed the electrification solution for city buses in 2010 and has delivered more than 80,000 electric buses globally, the company said.

To date, BYD's commercial vehicle footprint has spread to more than 400 cities in more than 70 countries around the world, including Amsterdam, the Netherlands; London, the UK; Tokyo, Japan; and Sao Paulo, Brazil, BYD said.

BYD sold 1,447 commercial vehicles in June, bringing cumulative sales for the first half of the year to 5,838 units, according to figures it announced on July 1.

Passenger cars, BYD's main business, sold 340,211 units in June and 1,607,145 units in the first half of the year.

BYD's BEV market share is set to surge in 2024, the year it is expected to overtake Tesla in BEV sales. This shift underscores the dynamic nature of the global EV market, said Counterpoint.
