Xpeng management said earlier this month that Mona's first model will be unveiled in June and will go on sale and begin deliveries in the third quarter.
An undisguised spy photo of the first model of Xpeng's (NYSE: XPEV) sub-brand codenamed Mona has been revealed for the first time ahead of its upcoming June debut.
The image circulating in many WeChat groups today shows what is suspected to be Mona's first models seen on the road and without any camouflage.
The image is blurry, but the Chinese name of the new brand is vaguely visible in two characters, and the models include the “03”.
The model's taillight design matches the rear details of the Mona brand's first model that Xpeng unveiled on April 25, the first day of the Beijing auto show.
In announcing the acquisition of ride-hailing giant Didi Global's electric vehicle (EV) business on August 28, 2023, Xpeng said it plans to launch a new brand codenamed Mona in 2024.
The first model of the Mona project will be an A-class smart EV model to be launched in 2024. The new model and brand will differentiate itself from the Xpeng-branded products and the main brand, it said last year.
Didi will support the Mona project with a mobility ecosystem and enter the shared mobility market, and will pave the way for Xpeng to build a mass-market RMB 150,000 ($20,700) price segment smart EV model, according to a statement from Xpeng last year.
On May 20, Xpeng's chairman and CEO said at an AI Day event that Mona's first model will be unveiled in June and shared a glimpse of the model's head.
On May 21, Xpeng management said in an earnings call that the first model of Mona will be unveiled in June and will be launched and begin deliveries in the third quarter.
Xpeng believes Mona will be a superstar product in the A-class all-electric market, the company said.
The Xpeng brand will begin deliveries of a new B-class pure-electric sedan in the fourth quarter of this year as the first model to reach its 25 percent technology cost reduction target, the company said.
Xpeng is confident of achieving a significant year-on-year increase in monthly sales in the fourth quarter of this year, with the help of the new Xpeng model and the Mona model, its management said.
Mona will reportedly use batteries from BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY), as will Nio's (NYSE: NIO) Onvo sub-brand.
Battery suppliers for the Mona's first model include BYD and has a range of more than 500 kilometers, local media outlet 21jingji said in a May 14 report, citing people familiar with the matter.
