GAC Group has unveiled its solid-state battery technology and hopes to start making the new batteries available for production vehicles in 2 years.

With its third-generation sponge silicon negative electrode and high-capacity solid-state positive electrode technology, GAC's all-solid-state battery technology allows for energy densities in excess of 400 Wh/kg, the company said at a tech day event today.

The all-solid-state battery offers a more than 50 percent increase in mass energy density and a more than 52 percent increase in volumetric energy density compared to current state-of-the-art liquid lithium-ion batteries, GAC said.

The development of an all-solid-state battery is as difficult as climbing Mount Everest, requiring breakthroughs in materials, design, manufacturing and integration, the company said.

The battery uses a 100 percent solid-state electrolyte with features including ultra-high energy density, ultra-safety, and ultra-wide usage temperature range, and has already moved from the lab to mass production, GAC said.

The solid-state battery will be used in production vehicles in 2026, starting with Hyper-branded electric vehicle (EV) models, which can easily achieve a range of more than 1,000 kilometers, GAC said. Hyper is a brand of GAC Aion, GAC's EV arm.

GAC is the latest local carmaker to market for solid-state batteries.

unveiled its 150-kWh semi-solid-state battery when it launched the ET7 sedan at the Nio Day 2020 event on January 9, 2021, allowing this new battery technology to start gaining a lot of attention.

The 150-kWh battery pack has seen some output recently and is expected to begin entering service in late April, William Li, Nio's founder, chairman, and CEO, said on April 8.

On the evening of April 8, IM Motors, the EV unit of SAIC Motor Corp, unveiled the IM L6 electric sedan in China, saying that the top-trim version of the model will be powered by solid-state batteries.

The solid-state battery, which IM Motors describes as a "first-generation light-year solid-state battery," has a capacity of 130 kWh and a CLTC range of more than 1,000 kilometers.
