China's new energy vehicle (NEV) production and sales rebounded significantly in March from February, as business activity returned to normal after the New Year holiday.

China sold 883,000 NEVs in March, up 35.3 percent year-on-year and up 85.1 percent from February, according to data released today by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

CAAM's NEV sales are the wholesale sales of automakers, including those in China and those exported to overseas markets. NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel-cell vehicles.

After the Spring Festival, companies' production and business activities accelerated, and the manufacturing sentiment expanded significantly, CAAM said in a report.

China's auto production and sales showed faster growth in March, with the market share of NEVs stabilizing at more than 30 percent, CAAM said.

China's BEV sales in March were 566,000 units, up 15.5 percent year-on-year and up 92.5 percent from February.

PHEV sales in March were 317,000 units, up 95.1 percent year-on-year and up 73.2 percent from February.

Fuel cell vehicle sales in March were 200 units, down 52.2 percent year-on-year.

China's all vehicle sales in March were 2,694,000 units, up 9.9 percent year-on-year and up 70.2 percent from February.

This means that NEV penetration was 32.8 percent in March, up from 30.1 percent in February.

In March, vehicle exports from China were 502,000 units, up 37.9 percent year-on-year,2 and up 33 percent from February.

Of these, NEV exports were 124,000 units, up 59.4 percent year-on-year and up 52 percent from February.

China exported 100,000 units of BEVs in March, up 41 percent year-on-year and up 50.9 percent from February.

China exported 24,000 units of PHEVs in March, up 240 percent year-on-year and up 56.7 percent from February.

Major EV makers saw sales in China fall last week, partly due to the Tomb Sweeping Day holiday.
