This represents an increase of 27.03 percent over the 666,000 units recorded in the same month last year and an increase of 8.46 percent over the 780,000 units in July.

The data released by the CAAM is the wholesale sales of automakers, where NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles. In July, China's NEV sales decreased by 3.23 percent from June.

China's BEV sales in August were 597,000 units, up 14.37 percent year-on-year and up 10.35 percent from July.

PHEV sales in August were 249,000 units, up 73 percent year-on-year and up 4.18 percent from July.

Fuel cell vehicle sales in August were 200 units, down 30.6 percent year-on-year.

China's total vehicle sales in August were 2,582,000 units, up 8.35 percent year-on-year and up 8.17 percent from July.

This means that the penetration rate of NEVs in China was 32.8 percent in August, slightly higher than the 32.7 percent in July.

China's production of NEVs was 843,000 units in August, up 22 percent year-on-year and up 4.7 percent from July.

China's production of all vehicles in August was 2,575,000 units, up 7.5 percent year-on-year and up 7.2 percent from July.

From January to August, China's NEV sales were 5.37 million units, up 39.51 percent year-on-year, accounting for 29.5 percent of the 18.21 million units of all vehicles sold.

BEV sales were 3.86 million units in January-August, up 29.13 percent year-on-year. PHEVs were 1.51 million units, up 85.37 percent year-on-year.

In August, exports of vehicles from China were 408,000 units, up 32.1 percent year-on-year and up 3.9 percent from July.

Among them, exports of NEVs amounted to 90,000 units, up 8.1 percent year-on-year while down 11.2 percent from July.

China exported 2.94 million vehicles from January to August, up 61.9 percent year-on-year. Of these, 727,000 units of NEVs were exported, up 1.1 times that of the same period of last year, the CAAM report said.

Although August is still traditionally a slow sales season, Chinese consumers' demand for cars continued to be unleashed, supported by China's policies and promotions by car companies, the CAAM said.

Demand is expected to be further unleashed as the effects of the policy's support materialize and as the automotive industry is about to enter its traditional peak sales season, the CAAM said.
