For car companies, insurance registrations are data that more accurately reflect sales, and this data for Nio, Xpeng Motors, and Li Auto in June reveals something interesting.
Nio's insurance registrations in June were 7,777 units, up 109.1 percent year-over-year and 28.0 percent from the previous month, according to data aggregated by Essence Securities.
Among them, Nio ES6, EC6 and EC8 insurance registrations were 3,660, 2,711 and 1,406 units respectively.
Nio's insurance registrations reached 21,259 units in the second quarter of 2021, up 7.1 percent from the previous quarter.
Geographically, cities with restrictions on vehicle purchases contributed 49.2 percent of sales of the ES6, Nio's top-selling model, in June.
In cities where there are no restrictions on vehicle purchases but restrictions on vehicle travel, the percentage was 22.0 percent. In cities without any restrictions, the percentage was 28.8 percent.
The five cities with the highest number of Nio ES6 insurance registrations in June were Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Suzhou, which together contributed 49 percent of sales.
Xpeng registered 6,639 units in June, up 502.5 percent year-over-year and 15.7 percent from the previous month.
Among them, Xpeng P7 insurance registrations reached 4,846 units and Xpeng G3 reached 1,793 units.
Xpeng insurance registrations reached 17,336 units in the second quarter of 2021, achieving a 36.9 percent increase over the previous quarter.
Geographically, cities with restrictions on vehicle purchases contributed 49.3 percent of Xpeng P7 sales in June.
In cities where there are no restrictions on vehicle purchases but restrictions on travel, the percentage was 19.3 percent. In cities without any restrictions, the percentage was 31.4 percent.

Li Auto's sole model, the Li ONE, registered 7,827 insurance units in June, up 313.9 percent year-over-year and 61.6 percent from the previous month.
The 2021 Li ONE was launched on May 25 and deliveries began in June, helping Li Auto's sales increase 2,983 units in June compared to the previous month.
Li Auto insurance registrations reached 18,193 in the second quarter of 2021, up 47.7 percent from the previous quarter.
Geographically, cities with restrictions on vehicle purchases contributed 35.8 percent of Li ONE sales in June.
In cities where there are no restrictions on vehicle purchases but restrictions on travel, the percentage was 30.1 percent. In cities without any restrictions, the percentage was 34.1 percent.
The five cities with the highest number of Li ONE insurance registrations in June were Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Chengdu and Zhengzhou, which together accounted for 33.4 percent.
