WM Motor founder says Baidu's entry into car-making industry a good thing

At present, the track for Chinese emerging car companies to build cars is still relatively narrow, and it is good to have more players coming in to build cars, said Shen Hui, founder, chairman, and CEO of WM Motor, talking about Baidu's entry into the field.

WM Motor today announced the mass production of the driverless-capable W6, a new intelligent driverless model developed by WM Motor in deep cooperation with Baidu, which will be delivered in the first half of 2021.

Shen said that Baidu is WM Motor's largest external shareholder and that the latest W6's autonomous driving technology was jointly developed by the two companies, using Baidu Apollo's cloud-based computing power.

He believes that the capability and cost of autonomous driving is closely related to the arithmetic power, and that doing cloud-based autonomous driving can use the high arithmetic power of the cloud at low cost. Nio, on the other hand, takes a different route with its ADAM platform that concentrates four Nvidia chips and eight cameras to provide more than 1,000T of arithmetic power.

Talking about Baidu's entry into the car-making field, he said that the track for new energy vehicles is still relatively narrow, and it is good to have more players coming in to build cars and bake up the atmosphere.

Chinese electric vehicle startup WM Motor announced today that it has launched the mass production of its driverless-capable W6 model, jointly developed with Baidu. Deliveries of the vehicle will begin in the first half of 2021.
