In the January-April period, China sold 283,043 vehicles, down 7.25 percent from 305,164 in the same period last year.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) sold significantly fewer China-made vehicles last month, falling back to levels close to February, when the Chinese New Year holiday fell.

The US electric vehicle (EV) maker sold 62,167 China-made vehicles in April, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

That monthly sales, which include exports from China to overseas markets, were down 18.03 percent from 75,842 a year ago, and down 30.20 percent from 89,064 in March, and slightly higher than the 60,365 vehicles sold in February.

February 10-17 was the 2024 Chinese New Year holiday, which caused disruption to carmakers ' production.

In January-April, Tesla China sold 283,043 vehicles, down 7.25 percent from 305,164 in the same period a year ago, data compiled by CnEVPost showed.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that currently has an annual capacity of more than 950,000 vehicles, its largest in the world.

The plant produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, and not only delivers to local consumers, but is also an export hub for Tesla. A breakdown of local deliveries and exports is not available at this time.

Tesla's pattern is to produce cars for export in the first half of the quarter and for the local market in the second half, the company has previously said.

Notably, Bloomberg reported on March 22 that Tesla reduced EV production at its China factory due to sluggish growth in new energy vehicle (NEV) sales and fierce competition in the market.

On April 1, Tesla raised the prices of all three variants of the Model Y by RMB 5,000 yuan ($690) in China, in contrast to price cuts by other EV makers in the price war.

The move appeared to be aimed at boosting orders from customers on the sidelines, as it had indirectly teased the price hike 10 days earlier.

On April 21, Tesla cut prices across its entire lineup in China, with prices for the locally produced Model 3 and Model Y, and the imported Model S and Model X all slashed by RMB 14,000 yuan.

On April 24, Tesla announced that customers who purchase already-produced vehicles of the Model 3 and Model Y before June 30 can enjoy a 0 down payment plan.
