A growing number of local electric vehicle (EV) makers are preparing to launch solid-state batteries, with GAC Aion's Hyper brand being the latest.

Hyper will hold a launch event on Friday, April 12 to unveil its all-solid-state battery, it said today on Weibo.

The battery will feature a 100 percent solid-state electrolyte with ultra-high energy density, strong intrinsic safety, and an ultra-wide usage temperature range, Hyper said.

The solid-state battery has already moved from the lab to mass production applications, Hyper said.

At the end of November last year, GAC Aion announced new breakthroughs in solid-state battery technology at its press event at the 2023 Guangzhou auto show, and said it would realize all-solid-state batteries for use in mass-produced vehicles by 2026.

GAC Aion's new technology will reduce the life decay of solid-state batteries by 50 percent, the company said at the time.

The company has increased the energy density of all-solid-state batteries based on silicon negative electrodes from 300 Wh/kg to 350 Wh/kg, GAC Aion said in February.

IM Motors, the EV unit of SAIC Motor Corp, unveiled the IM L6, its fourth production vehicle and second sedan, in China yesterday.

IM Motors began pre-sales of the IM L6 with a price range of RMB 230,000 ($31,810) to RMB 330,000 yuan.

Notably, IM Motors claimed that the model is the first production car in the industry to be equipped with a quasi-900 V ultra-fast-charging solid-state battery. However, the battery pack will only be available on the top-trim model.

IM Motors calls the solid-state battery "a first-generation light-year solid-state battery" with a capacity of 130 kWh and a CLTC range of more than 1,000 kilometers.

With many details yet to be released, it's unclear whether the IM L6 with a semi-solid-state battery will be priced at the same level as the pre-sale price when it goes on sale.

announced the 150-kWh semi-solid-state battery when it unveiled the ET7 sedan at the Nio Day 2020 event on January 9, 2021, allowing this new battery technology to start gaining a lot of attention.

That 150-kWh battery pack has seen some output recently and is expected to begin entering service in late April, William Li, Nio's founder, chairman, and CEO, said on April 8.
